The core technology in the zettasun panel is the embedded tracking and concentrating system. This system was developed to improve the reliability of standard CPV systems by taking all of the moving parts and placing them in a controlled environment. Additionally, the tracking system was designed so that the installation of the panel becomes easier since each panel is effectively its own tracker.
Our proprietary tracking mechanism is completely inside the panel - so there are no external parts exposed to the elements. We bend the light through two simple planar rotating lenses that are completely balanced and require less than one watt to manipulate. The lenses rotate one time per day from east in the morning to west in the evening. The light is focused onto 48 high performance multi-junction cells and the panel produces over 300W in a standard configuration of ~1.6m2. The panel is self-powered, self-monitoring and requires no special setup - just like a normal silicon panel.
The only difference is our panel is 11 inches thick vs. 2 inches and weighs under 70 pounds.
Since we use very little PV material and our lenses are very inexpensive - we are able to build our panel for less than $0.60 cents per watt. We can concentrate onto any PV material ranging from 10X to 1000X simply by varying the optics and the thickness of our panel design.
